The Intellectual Property Research Center (IPRC) of Xi’an Jiaotong University is established in December 2004, its predecessor was founded in 1985---Technical and Economic Law Research Center, which is one of the earliest agencies to award Master degree of Economic Law in China. Our IPRC has distinctive training models for graduate student to be law personnel with high qualities who also knows economy, management, technology, foreign language through broadening legal knowledge, doing legal research and legal practices. IPRC builds a comprehensive platform of theoretical innovation, personnel cultivation, governance advices, public-opinion guidance and social service, including intellectual property’s teaching, scientific research, practice and service. It has become one of the first series’ key research bases of philosophy and social science in Shaanxi Province.
With regard to team development and research fields, IPRC has 50 researchers, including 25 professors, 25 associate professors, and other part time world-famous Intellectual Property (IP) experts at present. IPRC focuses on all kinds of researches in IP field, especially in significant theories of intellectual property, strategy and application of intellectual property, science and technology innovation and patent law, economic analysis of intellectual property, network intellectual property, intellectual property and security of information, legal protection of traditional knowledge and intellectual property protection of Chinese medicine.
In academic communities and research bases, it establishes Science and Technology Law Research Society of Shaanxi Law Society, Intellectual Property Law Research Society of Xi’an Law Society, Intellectual Property Judicial Expertise Center, first Film and Television Copyright Research Base and Copyright Arbitration Center, as well as 5 internship bases, and participates in the building of Specialty Committee of Research on Protection of Traditional Knowledge of World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies and Specialty Committee of Chinese Medicine of China Intellectual Property Society.
For achievements of teaching, research and practice, the center launches several courses on intellectual property, among which “Intellectual Property Law” is chosen as a provincial outstanding course, winning a Provincial Teaching Achievements Award and two Teaching Achievements Awards of XJTU. In recent three years, members of IPRC undertake major programs of national social science, national natural science foundation of China,national 863 program, national social science fund and nearly 540 provincial research programs, publish about 300 academic papers and 50 academic works and textbooks as well as win about 50 academic awards. The center plays a great role in intellectual property field by offering intellectual property service, like suggestions and thoughts on decision consultation, related legislation, regulation draft and evaluation and judicial expertise, most of which are adopted by the government and judicial authority.
Professor Ma Zhiguo, post of director of the center, is PH.D supervisor in intellectual property, lawyer, arbitrator, and judicial expert in intellectual property, associate chairman of China Science and Technology Law Society and Specialty Committee of Research on Protection of Traditional Knowledge of World Federation of Chinese Medicine Societies, first “Selected Expert of National Intellectual Property Database”. He, the key expert of intellectual property strategic research, receives a first “China Science and Technology Law Outstanding Achievement Award”, a “National Intellectual Property Strategy-making Vital Contribution Award”, and “National Great Popularization of Social Science Figure”.
